"Silver
and gold have I none, but what I have, I give you."
(Acts 3:6)
I
taught in China for four years with Amity. I was placed
in a small remote rural area in Jiangxi Province.
My
students were from poor villages and towns. Many of
them were the sons and daughters of peasant farmers
and the first in their family ever to make it to college.
For many of them, the family had contributed all it
had to give them the chance of an education. Students
in China thirst for knowledge, for learning, for anything
you can offer them. You may not have silver and gold,
but you can offer your native language skills, yourwillingness
to serve, your desire to improve their lives in some
small way.
I
never felt isolated or alone in Jiangxi. The local
community very quickly adopted me as their own. I
got to see, experience, taste and smell rural Chinese
life for myself. Everywhere I went I encountered hospitality
second-to-none. People didn't have silver or gold
to offer me, but they gave of what they did have,
in abundance and from the heart.
Teach
in China with Amity - it's better than silver or gold.
